Jan 27 SPW Notes

Jan 27/09 Strong Public Witness Gathering FH Presbytery– Turner Valley – Meeting Notes

Present:  Ron, Karl, Margaret, Jamie, Bill, Mary, Ida, Paula

1,    Welcome & introductions was followed by reviewing the draft agenda

2.    notes from last meeting reviewed

3.    From last meeting: housing document was posted on the JustUs blog; report prepared on alternative Christmas gifts.  See #6 below.

4.    KAIROS update.  Carbon Sabbath workshop to be held in Calgary, Jan 27th, 530 pm to teach folk how to implement and use the CSI resources in congregational  & community settings.   Mary will be attending, and will report back to us via the JustUs blog.  Poster shared.   Re-Energize info from KAIROS website shared.  Resources for KAIROS Sunday posted on JustUs blog.  Rev. Bill Phipps will be a guest speaker at Strathmore United Church Feb 1st to educate and inform about KAIROS.  Speakers are available from KAIROS Calgary office, contact Clint Mooney at St. Matthews United.  A guest speaker from KAIROS will provide a 1 hour in-service to the court at our March presbytery meeting.

5.    Allan Buckingham provided the court with info about his experiences in the Holy Land.  Newspaper articles were shared giving background to the tensions in the Holy Land.  Connections between our church and the Holy Land through partners.  United for Peace provides some advocacy opportunities, as well as learning and fund raising options.

6.    Margaret has done research on alternative Christmas gifts and will share her notes with the SPW division.  Bay of Quinte partnership guidelines were shared showing their criteria for engaging in charity or social justice work.  Also shared was the M&S Fund criteria for partnership projects and funding.  Discussion on creating a similar set of guidelines for FH presbytery.  We will have a draft outline for our March gathering.  An article from Mandate magazine “Every Day Empire” encouraging an “empire” audit of congregations was shared.  This would demonstrate how we may be inadvertently supporting oppression while the social action guidelines from Bay of Quinte and M&S show how to intentionally support social justice.

7.    Paula attended a meeting in Calgary with Barbara Lloyd from the national JGER office, and shared an information sheet that Barbara had prepared outlining the role and function of JGER (Justice, Global and Ecumenical Relations Unit).  Much of our social justice work has been delegated to the congregations and presbytery’s.  Resources for social action can be obtained from our partner in justice ministry – KAIROS.

8.    Update from Ron about the two day teleconference event held at the Wisdom Centre in Calgary.  Key points noted:  It’s not just about ‘being green’, development must also be done with moral and ethical integrity;  our theology informs our understanding of sustainable development; sustainable prosperity comes from economic systems rooted in sound moral & ethical principles.

If there are any errors or omissions to these notes, please reply to this email.

The meeting adjourned & we returned to the full court. Next meeting March 24th in Carmangay.
